Inexpensive Holiday Decorating

Gotta Have It

My wife and I have found a great way to get awesome decorations without breaking the bank. One year we were having a slow financial year so we couldn’t go out and get new decorations which we normally had done the few years before. You know how you see that lighted 4ft Reindeer in someone else’s yard and think, I’ve gotta get me one of those. Well a couple of years ago we couldn’t afford to do that so we just decorated with what we had. Don’t get me wrong, it was plenty but we like picking up that new decoration they just came out with.

Hidden Treasures

After Christmas had passed that year we were taking down the decorations and one of the bins we used to store them in broke. We don’t have a lot of space in the garage so we like to make good use of what we have. We had to replace the bin. So we go to the giant superstore that puts small businesses out of business (that is another story) and on the way to the aisle with their storage bins we passed their clearance aisle. We didn’t think much of it and were just passing by when I caught a glimpse of the lighted Reindeer I wanted. I had to know what kind of clearance price they had for it so I went to check it out. The thing normally sold for about $40 so I figured it was going to be about 20 bucks. WRONG….They had it on sale for $6. I couldn’t believe it. I thought maybe I was looking at it wrong so I took it to one of their price scanners and there it was, 4ft Lighted Reindeer-$6.

I totally scored and couldn’t pass it up so I got it. I normally didn’t pay much attention to the clearance section because I thought it was just the stuff that no one wanted because it sucked. I will never make that mistake again.

Now my wife and I make it a point to go window shopping after every big holiday. We can’t seem to bring ourselves to buy any decoration for a holiday that isn’t clearance priced now because the savings are so huge. One of the hidden benefits of shopping for decorations after the holiday comes when you get to open up decorations you bought the year before when you go to decorate for the holiday again. It’s like getting to open presents before the holiday is even there.
